1963 – 1980
I moved to New York in 1961 and then to a house in New Jersey in 1963. I made the whole attic into a studio and put in a skylight. My first child, Richard, was born in 1961, so I didn’t do much work then except for a few drawings. Then my daughter, Alicia, was born in ’66. I didn’t work the years I was pregnant, when I hurt all the time, or for a few years after each child was born when I couldn’t get a night’s sleep.
When I worked again, I did portraits and heads of friends and relatives.
I’m always very interested in the way people move. I feel that everyone has very individual ways of moving that reflect their personality. I’m very interested in musicians and dancers, and I’d make drawings at concerts and dance performances. In this period I would go to performances all the time in New York, classical performances and dance at Alvin Ailey.
